Recent studies have been conducted using the ex vivo human placental model as an attempt to determine the maternal-fetal transfer or HIV.
Since one of the potential sources of fetal HIV infection is the monocyte/macrophage, we have attempted to determine if activated macrophages will pass from the maternal circulation into the fetal circulation via the intravillous space and the intervillous tree.
